How to Open a JXL File
A .jxl file is a JPEG XL image. Here is how to view it on each system — or convert it to JPG below so it opens everywhere.
Files never leave your device — conversion runs in your browser
No JXL file?
On Windows
Install the free JPEG XL Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. After that, the Photos app and File Explorer thumbnails can show .jxl files. Programs that do not use the Windows image codecs may still refuse the file — convert it to JPG for those.
On Mac
Recent macOS versions can open JPEG XL in Preview and show it in Finder. On older versions, open the file in a current browser or convert it to JPG.
On Android
Most gallery apps cannot show JXL yet. Open the file in an up-to-date browser, or use the converter on this page: tap the box above, choose the .jxl from Downloads, and save the JPG.
In a web browser
Chrome 155 and later, Firefox 157 and later, and Safari 17 and later can display JXL images. Dragging a .jxl file into a browser window is a quick way to view it on any system.
When you need a JPG
To upload, share, print or edit the image in apps that do not support JXL, convert it with the tool above, or see why Chrome saves images as JXL.
