How to save a JXL image as JPG from Chrome

  1. In Chrome, right-click the image and choose "Save image as…" (on Android: long-press → Download image). The file ends in .jxl.
  2. Drop the .jxl file onto the box above, or tap the box and pick it from your Downloads folder.
  3. Keep JPG selected. Conversion starts immediately; click Download to save the JPG.

Why you are getting .jxl files now

JPEG XL (JXL) is a newer image format that makes smaller files than JPEG at the same quality. Chrome 155 added support for decoding it (announced on the Chrome developer blog in October 2026), and Firefox and Safari can display it as well.

Many websites pick the image format per visitor: if your browser says it understands JXL, the site may send JXL to save bandwidth. The page looks the same, but when you save the image, Chrome stores the file it actually received — a .jxl.

The problem appears afterwards: many photo apps, upload forms, messengers and older operating systems do not open JXL yet. Converting to JPG fixes that. If you need transparency, convert JXL to PNG instead.

Opening JXL without converting

If you only want to look at the image, you can often open it directly — see how to open a JXL file on Windows, Mac and Android.

FAQ

Why does Chrome save images as .jxl?

Since Chrome 155 can decode JPEG XL, websites and image CDNs that choose the format per browser may send Chrome a JXL version of a picture. "Save image as" stores exactly what the site sent, so you get a .jxl file even if the page looked like an ordinary photo.

Can I make Chrome save as JPG directly?

Chrome itself has no "save as JPG" option for images. You can save the .jxl and convert it on this page in a few seconds, or use a browser extension that re-encodes images when saving.

Does this work on Chrome for Android?

Yes. Long-press the image, choose Download image, then open this page in Chrome, tap the box and pick the downloaded .jxl from your Downloads folder. The converted JPG is saved to Downloads.

Is the image uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab; the file never leaves your device.
